JSE-listed Merafe Resources' attributable ferrochrome production from the Glencore Merafe Chrome Venture for the quarter ended March 31 was 3 000 t, a decrease of about 95% compared with production in the quarter ended March 31, 2025.

The reduction in production was primarily attributable to the continued suspension of production at the venture's Wonderkop and Boshoek smelters.

The smelters have struggled to remain competitive, citing high electricity costs. The venture and power utility Eskom have negotiated a special 62c/kWh tariff for a five-year period, which the National Energy Regulator of South Africa still needs to approve.

Merafe's attributable chrome ore production from the venture for the quarter was 214 000 t, resulting in a marginal increase of about 3% year-on-year.

Further, the company's attributable platinum group metals concentrate production from the venture in the quarter under review was 3 200 oz, resulting in a decrease of about 12% year-on-year.
